Ketamine therapy for bipolar disorder How Ketamine Treats Bipolar Disorder

The exact mechanism of how ketamine treats Bipolar Disorder is still being researched. In multiple studies, ketamine infusion therapy has reduced symptoms of depression and suicidal thoughts in people with treatment-resistant Bipolar Disorder. It is believed that ketamine stimulates the creation of new neural pathways in the brain to help regulate moods.

What is Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by extreme shifts in mood, energy and activity levels. Individuals with bipolar disorder experience episodes of both mania (or hypomania) and depression. As a spectrum disorder, there is a range of severity in the symptoms and episodes. The exact cause of bipolar disorder is not known, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, environmental and neurological factors.

Types of Bipolar Disorder

The 3 most common types of bipolar disorder include Bipolar 1, Bipolar II and Cyclothymic disorder. However, there are other subtypes of bipolar disorder, including rapid-cycling bipolar disorder and mixed bipolar disorder, which involve episodes of mania, hypomania and depression that alternate rapidly or occur simultaneously.

Bipolar I Disorder

This type of bipolar disorder is characterized by 1 or more manic episodes lasting at least one week or that require hospitalization. In some cases, people with bipolar I disorder may experience depressive episodes.

Bipolar II Disorder

This type of bipolar disorder involves episodes of hypomania (less severe than full-blown mania) and depression. Hypomanic episodes last at least 4 days, while depressive episodes last at least 2 weeks. Bipolar II disorder is often misdiagnosed as depression because people with this condition may seek treatment only during depressive episodes.

Cyclothymic Disorder

This type of bipolar disorder involves periods of hypomania and depression lasting for at least 2 years. The symptoms are milder than those of bipolar I or II disorder, but they are more persistent.
