Ketamine Infusion Therapy for PTSD

R and R MD treats even the most aggressive cases of PTSD

How it Treats

Ketamine has become increasingly utilized to treat and prevent PTSD in certain patients. Scientists and medical physicians alike have found ketamine to provide consistently effective results as an alternative to common stress relief medications.

Not only has it been found to eliminate the typical side effects experienced by users of those medications, it also produces more consistent results, and in some cases, completely cures PTSD at its source. At Reset Restore MD, we treat the root cause for people who can’t escape their PTSD.

Ketamine therapy for PTSD How ketamine treats PTSD

Antidepressants and cognitive-behavioral therapy are typically used to treat PTSD but have not proven to completely alleviate PTSD symptoms in many patients. Off-label treatments such as ketamine infusion therapy have been shown to treat the symptoms in more refractory and disabling cases of PTSD.

Some researchers believe PTSD is caused by increased activity of a receptor in the brain called the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. Excessive activation of the NMDA receptor has been shown to cause increased formation of spontaneous and invasive memories. Ketamine functions as an antagonist or inhibitor of the NMDA receptor thereby decreasing the formation of intrusive thoughts.

Ketamine is particularly effective in areas of the brain that deal with emotion and long-term memory and can also help with depression, chronic pain and addiction.

What Causes PTSD?

PTSD can be caused by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, such as a natural disaster, combat, sexual or physical assault or a serious accident. Some individuals develop PTSD as a result of learning about a traumatic event that happened to a loved one. PTSD is a complex disorder. The exact causes of why some individuals develop PTSD while others do not are not fully understood.

PTSD Treatment for Veterans

In 2020, about 13 million Americans had PTSD according to the US Department of Veteran Affairs. The Journal of Traumatic Stress examined the prevalence of PTSD among veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars in a 2020 study. The study found approximately 13-15% of veterans who served met the diagnostic criteria for PTSD. The study stated PTSD was more common among veterans who had experienced combat or who had a history of traumatic brain injury.

It is important to note that PTSD affects individuals of all ages, genders and backgrounds. Seeking treatment is an important step in managing symptoms and improving overall quality of life.
